Adapting Without Erasing
How Adaptability Became My Superpower
Arriving in Morehead City, North Carolina, at ten years old felt like stepping onto another planet. Everything was unfamiliar—the language, the culture, the way of life. I didn’t speak a word of English, and I was just a kid trying to make sense of a world that didn’t feel like my own.

But here’s the thing about being uprooted and replanted—it forces you to build resilience and grow in entirely new ways.
Our new home in America wasn’t much by local standards, but to me, it was miraculous. A sink with running water. A refrigerator humming with food. These things were wonders I couldn’t stop marveling at. But no matter how “amazing” the new world seemed, it still didn’t feel like home.

Adapting to this life wasn’t easy. The kids at school didn’t understand me, and I didn’t understand them either. My name became “G” because “Gaurav” was too hard to pronounce. And while I learned English by mimicking cartoons on TV, what I was really learning was how to fit in.
Adaptation isn’t about erasing who you are. It’s about finding balance. My parents worked tirelessly cleaning motel rooms, reminding me daily that hard work would lead to opportunity. They never forgot where they came from—and neither did I. India was still a part of me, but I knew if I wanted to thrive in this new world, I needed to embrace it fully.

The greatest takeaway from this chapter of my life is that adaptation is a superpower.
Adapting to life’s changes isn’t about abandoning who you are—it’s about staying true to your roots while embracing the new. Here are a few lessons I learned:
Language is Power.
Reinvent Without Losing Yourself.
Resilience is Built, Not Born.
Community Matters.
These lessons shaped my life and are part of the reason I’m here, holding my first published book today. F*ck Rock Bottom is a guide for anyone who is ready to build the resilience needed to adapt to life’s challenges, and rewrite their story in a way that’s both true to who they are and who they wish to become.
